Bamboo Decking Details

House of Bamboo proudly offers DassoXTR’s fused bamboo decking which boasts a Janka hardness rating twice that of Merbau.

Dasso uses a special, patented, heat treatment process that alters the hardness, dimensional stability and durability of their bamboo decking to a level that exceeds the tropical hardwoods usually used for decking.

This makes DassoXTR the superior choice for all exterior decking applications in both residential and commercial installations.

The decking boards come pre-oiled with Woca Oil, so they are ready to install without further treatment. Dasso employs an exclusive tongue & grooved end matched system to attach the planks seamlessly together for quick and easy installation. They are locked into place with a clever, concealed stainless steel clip system without any visible signs of the clips to give a smooth, modern finish.

You can build your deck with confidence knowing that Dasso decking has a Janka hardness rating of 3820lbf, which is twice that of merbau and a BAL fire rating of BAL 29. It is also termite resistant making it the best choice for Australian conditions.

Bamboo Decking FAQ’s

What is Fused Bamboo®?

Fused Bamboo® is manufactured by a patented process, combining two stages of high heat. The first carbonises the bamboo, removing all of the starch and sugar. The second then restructures the bamboo, reinforcing its natural strength characteristics. The modified bamboo strands are then fused together using phenolic resin – the same resins used to make bowling balls.

The result is an extremely dense and durable exterior-use product composed of 87% natural, fused strand bamboo fibres and 13% resin. The resins used are thermal set and non-reversible, which means they do not release fumes into the atmosphere. Fused bamboo does not contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Why is fused bamboo process so effective?

During the patented fusing process, sugars and starches are extracted from the bamboo fibre, leaving behind only the bamboo cell wall. Without these nutrient rich food sources, fungus will not attach itself to the bamboo cells and grow, thereby eliminating the breakdown of the cell walls – which is the main cause of rot.

Without a nutrient source, insects are also not attracted to the material, making it resistant to termites or other bugs.

Is bamboo decking considered an environmentally sustainable product?

Yes. Bamboo is a fast-growing grass that can be harvested every 6-7 years, unlike most hardwoods, which must grow for 60 years or more before they can be harvested.

This makes bamboo one of the most environmentally friendly and sustainable building products available.

Finishing, Wear, and Maintenance

Are the decking boards pre-oiled?

Yes, our bamboo decking receives one coat of WOCA exterior oil at the factory, which gives the boards their colour and provides surface and UV protection.

Does bamboo decking fade?

Bamboo decking behaves like any natural building material. If left untreated, or when the decking’s first oil coat wears off, the boards will eventually turn a silver-grey patina, usually after about 12-18 months.

How do I maintain my bamboo deck?

Typically, a penetrating oil finish will last 1–3 years on a deck, but the finish durability actually depends on the weather, how much wear & tear the deck receives and other local conditions. We recommend you evaluate the finish each season and maintain as needed.

Can DassoXTR bamboo decking be recycled?

Bamboo decking can can be recycled, sanded and resurfaced during its lifetime (approx. 50 years) to make into non-structural components. However as our bamboo decking is made of 87% bamboo strands and 13% Phenolic Binder, both of which are basic molecules made mostly of carbon (minor Hydrogen, Nitrogen and Oxygen), at the end of its 50 year life cycle, the material can be buried for natural disintegration or burnt to char.

Charring is a process where the molecules are changed to back carbon, a basic natural element. The Phenolic binder will give off  traces of toxic fumes when burnt, but the majority of the fumes released are CO2, Nitrogen and water.

Product Specifications, Packaging, and Availability

Explain DassoXTR’s bamboo decking end-matching system.

All of the bamboo decking includes a unique tongue and groove End Match System, whereby each board is end-matched for ease and improved quality of installation. This allows for a better looking deck, because end joints are not required to meet “on a joist” thereby offering a more random pattern.

In addition, our boards are side grooved for hidden fastening but can also be face screwed and plugged instead. Our decking boards have a reversible profile – smooth on one side and reeded on the other – giving you choice of installing them smooth side up for a sleek look, or the reeded side face up for a more textured look.

What are the specifications of the decking boards?

The patented fused bamboo technology we use produces strands of bamboo that are uniform in length, so they extend the full length of our 1850mm boards. The boards themselves have tongue & groove ends, called end-matching, with clips for concealed fixing included.

What is the manufacturer’s warranty on DassoXTR bamboo decking?

We offer a 25-year limited warranty against material defects in workmanship. We warrant that the material will not suffer structural damage due to rot, decay, or termites for that period of time, as long as it has been installed and maintained according to our guidelines.

Installation

Do DassoXTR bamboo boards need to be pre-drilled?

Yes. Strand woven bamboo is very dense and therefore does require pre-drilling before using any screws.

How do I fasten DassoXTR bamboo decking?

Our bamboo boards are pre-grooved for a hidden fastening system. We recommend using Tiger Claw TC-120 clips, which are black-plated, 304 stainless steel clips. Each pack covers about 50 square feet. Boards can also be face screwed and screwed and plugged.
