Katie Burgess: The Hive

Katie Burgess: The Hive

Greetings from the Australian Garden Show Sydney! Opposite our stand you can find The Urban Gardens which are small designer installations representing urban, small space gardens. Designers have been asked to deliver a conceptual garden on a smaller scale than the Inspirational Gardens, similar to the size of a small balcony or courtyard you would find inner city.

House of Bamboo® sponsored Katie Burgess, a young, uprising landscape designer and now we proudly present her amazing garden: The Hive, a garden that brings people together with nature and with each other. It represents community and has been designed to inspire a sense of connectedness to everything around us. Drawing on some permaculture concepts, it is a garden that is not only beautiful, but has many functions and relationships. Every plant is either edible or has a valuable function. This garden embraces diversity through plant selection and has a strong focus on working in harmony with nature, while still having a designer edge. The colour palette is classic and simple with all hard surfaces being in the monochromatic range, softened by the green and grey foliage of the plants. In this garden Katie has borrowed certain elements from modern gardens and blended them with the principles of permaculture to create a convergence of ecology and design.
