Calypso Restaurant & Lounge
Located in Shanghai’s Jing An Kerry Centre, Calypso Restaurant & Lounge merges urban sophistication with the elegance of natural materials. In collaboration with Shigeru Ban Architects, this two-story venue features laminated bamboo wall panels, woven bamboo screens, and ceilings from House of Bamboo. These elements showcase bamboo’s strength and versatility while supporting a sustainable design approach.
Inspired by the traditional “Mao House” style, the space includes an angled roof and a striking facade of illuminated, translucent paper tubes, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The main dining area on the ground floor flows seamlessly into an enclosed rooftop lounge, thanks to large bi-fold glass doors that bridge the indoor and outdoor spaces. A bamboo lattice suspended under a glass roof filters natural light, adding to the setting’s organic beauty.
This project demonstrates how engineered bamboo can bring both style and functionality to modern spaces. Since 1972, House of Bamboo has remained committed to offering sustainable material choices, enabling architects and designers to create beautiful, eco-friendly designs without compromise.
