For Architects & Specifiers
Bamboo is the fastest growing timber alternative
Specify without limitation.
House of Bamboo has supplied Australian architects and specifiers since 1972, from curved acoustic battens to load-bearing beams and columns, backed by independent testing and verified environmental credentials.

Products built for ambitious projects
From structural cladding systems to acoustic interiors and bespoke joinery, our series covers every application in your palette all with full technical documentation and BIM support.
From early concept to final installation
We work alongside your team at every stage not as a supplier, but as a material consultant who understands your brief, your timeline, and your project's performance requirements.

Structural performance meets
sustainable ambition
Architects and designers are being asked to prove carbon performance and responsible sourcing on every project. Engineered bamboo answers both: it is independently tested, third-party certified, and already built into architectural projects across Australia. It also holds its own as a premium material. It machines, fixes and finishes like hardwood while still offering the warmth and grain of the finished surface.
Three independent EPDs covering our bamboo ranges
Verified environmental credentials – Three EPDs published for Australasia cover our laminated, structural and strand-woven bamboo ranges. Each document Global Warming Potential, biogenic carbon storage and full LCA summaries, ready to use as evidence for Green Star credits and NABERS embodied carbon ratings.
Full Structural & Technical Data
Structural data you can design to - Bending strength, Janka hardness, BAL fire ratings and moisture resistance figures are available on request. Independent testing maps engineered bamboo to AS 1720.1 F-grades, up to an F34 hardwood equivalent, and our technical team will help you match the right grade to your application.
Bespoke to Your Brief
Much of our range is in stock at our Sydney warehouse and can be supplied direct to site. Where the standard ranges don't fit, we offer full bespoke design across profiles, finishes and fixing systems, from curved acoustic battens to prefabricated structural elements. Custom manufacturing typically takes 12 to 16 weeks from sign-off.
A Team That Speaks Your Language
Our team includes architects, interior designers and engineers across Australia, the USA, China and Italy, available from concept through installation. You get one expert contact for the life of your project, with technical guidance through your specification process.
How engineered bamboo compares to timber

Engineered bamboo is strong in compression and tension, sitting around an F34 hardwood equivalent under AS 1720.1. It is more flexible than hardwood in bend. In practice that means it excels in axially loaded elements like screen posts, partition framing and bracing, while flexural members are sized for stiffness. Products vary, so we specify the required property for each application.
Two product families,
two manufacturing processes
Engineered bamboo has more in common with glulam and other mass timber products than with the bamboo pole most people picture. Raw culms are split, skinned and thermally modified, then rebuilt under pressure into solid sections using resin binders rather than plastic composites. The two product families come from what happens next.

Laminated bamboo follows the precision route. The strips are planed, dried under controlled conditions, planed again to final dimensions, then glued and pressed into solid beams, much the way glulam is laid up from timber lamellae. The result is around 800 kg/m³ with a Janka hardness of 11.6, comparable to oak and ash, and available in continuous lengths up to 16 metres. It carries a Group 2 fire rating and suits beams, columns, joinery, doors and windows, cladding, acoustic panels and interior fitout.

A supplier with 50 years of experience
It started with an engineer who travelled through Asia in the 1960s and came home certain that bamboo belonged in Australian buildings. The groves and mills he found then are still the ones we work with, and fifty years of that partnership sits behind every board we supply.
Team of expert advisors
Our advisors trained in interiors and design before they became bamboo specialists, so they understand what your project is asking of the material and can guide the specification accordingly, from finish and fixing through to exposure and compliance.
Technical Data Sheets
Full product data for structural performance, fire ratings (BAL-29, BAL-40), durability classifications, Janka hardness, and moisture resistance across the entire product range.
Over 50 Award-winning projects
Our engineered and organic ranges have been specified into more than fifty award-winning projects, from the first building at Bradfield City to the Shaw Auditorium in Hong Kong. Hundreds more are quietly at work across Australia, in coastal decks, school ceilings and facades that have weathered beautifully.
Independent testing and research
Bamboo now has the evidence to match its reputation. Our engineered range is tested independently by researchers across Australia and abroad, including Professor Mahmud Ashraf's team at Deakin University, who apply the same protocols used for structural timber.

Frequently Asked Questions
Whether you're an architect, interior designer, or developer we've compiled answers to the most common questions about our materials, finishes, installation requirements, and design possibilities. Everything you need to move your project forward, in one place.
Both. It's been used in Australia for architectural work like battens, cladding, screening and flooring for years, and it's now proven in load-bearing roles, including the beams and columns in our Botany showroom and curved primary beams at Amphora in Marvel Stadium. Structural use is supported by engineered design and product testing on a project-by-project basis.
