In February this year, House of Bamboo turned 50, marking half a century of commitment to natural materials, sustainable building practices, and supporting the Australian architecture and design community. From humble roots back in 1972 when Mark Snyders began importing bamboo products to Australia, the company has grown into one of the most innovative and sustainable players in the industry, guided by the leadership and expertise of Jennifer Snyders who has transformed the business from specialty importer into comprehensive materials supplier and industry advocate.

The Greek islands are famous worldwide for their pure aesthetic and earthy tones, and the Santorini style is particularly popular for its refreshing and elegant finish that effortlessly combines simplicity with sophistication. Conveniently very easy to replicate, it can be summed up in three essential elements: white walls with blue accents, arches, and natural materials. This timeless aesthetic translates beautifully to Australian contexts, offering a relaxed Mediterranean-inspired approach to residential and hospitality design.

Drawing on her architecture training, Jennifer Snyders has transformed 13 Erith Street, Botany into the most stunning bamboo showroom ever seen in Australia, creating an immersive environment where bamboo's full potential becomes tangible and undeniably inspiring.

Functional, elegant, and sustainable, timber slats tick all the boxes of a popular cladding, fencing, and screening solution that architects increasingly specify across residential and commercial projects. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use, slatted screens and individual battens are being used on walls, ceilings, doors, fences, and screens by influential architects and designers who recognize that these versatile systems address multiple design challenges simultaneously while adding natural warmth and visual interest.

A growing trend in the world of architecture and design over the past few years has seen organic pole bamboo elevated to new heights, moving from traditional or rustic applications into sophisticated contemporary contexts. From Europe to Asia, industry leaders are turning their attention to reimagining how we view and use bamboo in the modern age, demonstrating that this ancient material possesses untapped potential for cutting-edge architecture when designers approach it with fresh perspectives and technical innovation.

To celebrate International Women's Day, we put the spotlight on female architects, interior designers, and industrial designers who are shaking and shaping the future of the industry for the better. In addition to being a female-led company driven by the passionate Jennifer Snyders, we are fortunate to work with some of the most established and promising women in the architecture and design world. These collaborations demonstrate how custom bamboo solutions address unique project challenges while advancing sustainability goals and design excellence.

Natural materials have been around for centuries, serving humanity's building needs long before industrial materials dominated construction. Hemp was found in French ruins dating back to the 6th century, bamboo has been used as a building material in China for 7,000 years, while thatch has been used on roofs since as early as 5000 BC. These materials' longevity reflects fundamental suitability for construction purposes combined with sustainability characteristics that modern materials struggle to match.

Timber fences are a convenient fencing solution but they tend to deteriorate with age, showing weathering, warping, and general wear that undermines property appearance. Instead of replacing the fence, which is costly and labour-intensive, why not cover it? This approach allows you to retain its structural ability while applying any finish you like to hide its tired look, achieving dramatic transformation at fraction of replacement cost while avoiding construction disruption and waste.

When acclaimed structural engineer Neil Thomas MBE stepped onto the House of Bamboo stage, it felt less like a formal keynote and more like the meeting of long-lost allies. Within minutes, we discovered a shared imperative: to leave the planet better than we found it, for our children and for the generations who will inhabit the buildings we design today. His presence brought decades of structural engineering excellence and environmental commitment to Australian architects hungry for guidance on sustainable material innovation.
